What are lathopana? Lathopana, also known as ladopana or baptism sets, contain all the necessary items needed to conduct the baptism including towels, an oil sheet to wrap the baby in immediately after baptism, an oil bottle to hold the holy oil, oil, and a bar of soap to wash the baby.
What do I need for the baptismal service? What does the Godparent supply for a baptism?
The items a Godparent needs to bring to the Baptismal service include:
1. One large white bath towel (oftentimes inscribed with the baby's initials or name. May be decorated with white, pink or blue etching),
2. Two white hand towels (for use by priest and Godparent),
3. One white oil sheet (to protect the Godparent's clothing - about the size of a twin bed sheet),
4. One soft white baby blanket (to wrap the baby in before the immersion),
5. One white onesie (for the priest to bless & to be worn underneath the baptismal outfit)
6. One bottle of extra virgin olive oil,
7. One new bar of Ivory soap (for the priest and Godparent).
The above is traditionally provided in the lathopana set. The items will be brought to the church by the Godparents-to-be (Blessed Celebration includes a nice sturdy presentable box with the lathopana orders) and kept in the changing room for use throughout the ceremony.
Additionally, a Godparent provides:
- a gold cross for the baby to have for years to come
- the baptism outfit including dress or suit, bonnet/hat to protect the oil-washed hair, socks and baby shoes.
- a diaper (and diaper cover for a dress)
- the martyrika or witness pins (see Witness Pins)
- a large baptismal candle and smaller candles for any children participating in the ceremony (see Baptismal Candles)
- the koufeta favors or martyrika (at times provided by the parent of the baptized child).
Do you offer personalization of the baptsmal towels and oil sheets? Yes - we can customize towels and oil sheets with whatever personalization you wish. We offer monogramming, name personalization, cross emblems.
